Brand Comparison

We've handled thousands of both. We've torn them apart, tested their seals, dropped them, soaked them, and put them back together. As a reseller with over 15 years handling surplus cases from both brands, we have a perspective that most reviewers don't — we know exactly how these cases hold up after years of real-world use, not just out of the box.

TL;DR — Bottom Line

Pelican wins on long-term durability, brand recognition, and surplus availability. SKB wins on latch ergonomics, specific instrument applications, and occasionally price when new. Both are excellent. The right choice depends on your application.

Build Quality: What We See After Years of Use

Pelican shells are harder to crack and show better long-term structural integrity. The polycarbonate material is extremely impact-resistant. After years of field use and surplus handling, we rarely see cracked Pelican shells — we see scratched, scuffed, painted-over Pelicans, but the shell itself almost never fails structurally.

SKB shells use a slightly different resin formulation that holds up well but can show more stress cracking around corners after extreme impacts. That said, SKB failures are still rare in our inventory — both brands build cases that outlast their typical use cycles by years.

The Latch Verdict

While we do see failed latches in both brands, we do see a higher amount of SKB latches needing replacement.

Waterproofing in Practice

Both brands are IP67 rated. In our experience handling thousands of cases, both maintain their waterproofing well over time as long as the O-ring is intact. One practical difference: Pelican's O-ring groove design tends to keep the O-ring better seated over time. SKB's groove is slightly shallower, and we occasionally see O-rings that have partially unseated after years of use — easy to fix, but worth checking on any used SKB.

Surplus Availability — The Practical Difference

This is the biggest real-world difference at The Case Place. Pelican cases dominate military and government surplus — the US military has specified Pelican as a primary case supplier for decades. When we source pallets from government liquidations, 80–90% of the cases are Pelican. SKB cases come into our inventory primarily from studio liquidations and production company sales — meaning less consistent availability but often better cosmetic condition.

Price Comparison

Scenario Pelican SKB
New retail (carry-on size) $189–$230 $150–$190
Surplus at The Case Place $90–$140 $80–$130
Resale value (used, good) Higher Moderate

Our Recommendation

If you're buying surplus: buy whatever is in stock at the better price. Both brands are excellent. If we have Pelican at a great price, buy Pelican. If SKB is the better deal that week, buy SKB. The protection difference is negligible for most applications.

If brand recognition matters — resale, professional impression, client-facing use: Pelican wins by a wide margin. Pelican is the name everyone knows.
